Human League - Night People (Emperor Machine Remix & Album Version)

The Human League return with a fantastic new single that is, to all intents and purposes, the follow-up to 1980's Sound Of The Crowd from the seminal Dare LP. Night People is released with a plethora of mixes through Wall Of Sound Records this week. For my money the Emperor Machine remix is the pick of the bunch with its Moroder and Kraftwerk flourishes. Smashing.

Dave Dresden November Mix

Legendary US DJ and producer Dave Dresden has been a fixture in East Coast clubs for nearly two decades. His recent November mix is cracking fun while his re-rub of the best track (IMHO) from LCD Soundsystem's This Is It album, Hit gives the track a welcome tribal edge.

EPMD - Strictly Business

The exact mid-point between De La Soul's Daisyage sampledelia and N.W.A.'s gangsta tales of the street, East-Coast group EPMD influenced a generation of hip hop crews. Here's their first underground hit from 1988, Strictly Business, the title track from their brilliant debut album. Great lo-fi vid, too!

The Sonics - Shot Down/LCD Soundsystem - Losing My Edge (Live At Trash)

This superb slice of maximum RnB from Nuggets/garagerock legends the Sonics turned up on the James 'LCD' Murphy-curated Greenberg soundtrack recently and sounds as amazing as ever. Not surprising that James chose it as he namechecked (3 times) the Tacoma, WA 5 piece on his brilliant hipster-baiting anthem, 'Losing My Edge'.

Todd Terje - Live From Secretsundaze, London

King of the re-edit Norwegian spacecadet Todd Terje put on a fine show when he played at London's Secretsundaze earlier this year. The set was captured by Red Bull Academy Radio and sits alongside several other fine TT mixes on their site.

Can't speak highly enough of Red Bull A's fantastic website. Featuring the cream of today's DJs alongside interviews with legends as diverse as Afrika Bambaataa, Todd Edwards, Pet Shop Boys and Carl Craig, it's a rollicking good listen. Click here to have a look.

Big Boi - Shutterbug (Jack Beats Remix)

Big Boi from Outkast's underrated recent LP, Sir Lucious Left Foot, went under a few people's radar when it was released a few weeks back. The single Shutterbug in particular was a real highlight and deserved to do better.

Here it is in (hotter than hot) remix form, re-rubbed by Jack Beats and right now appearing in fashionable DJ sets across the globe.

Space - Magic Fly

With the new Tron film and accompanying Daft P soundtrack coming up on the horizon, my thoughts turned to the original French discotechnorobots, Space. And no, not the Tom Jones Tom Jones Female Of The Species Scousers!

Dating from 1977, their debut LP Magic Fly and its title track started off the Spacedisco offshoot and sits alongside those other '77 electronica masterpieces, Trans Europe Express and I Feel Love.

Have a look at the video for Magic Fly and see just how influential they were on Messieurs Bangalter & de Homem Christo...

Walls - Hang Four (Allez-Allez Remix)

London-based DJs and producers Steve Nolan and Sam Willis (better known as Allez-Allez) have been tearing up dancefloors across the capital and beyond while making some of the most intriguing new releases around on the Kompact-related Boxer Recordings label (including last year's storming 'Defeatest' single).

Their now-legendary blog has been host to some of the finest mixes on all the interwebs with the likes of Hot Chip, Four Tet, Andrew Weatherall, Lindstrom, Optimo, Ewan Pearson and Joakim all having contributed exclusive sets.

This weekend they will be rocking the Stop Making Sense Festival in Croatia (situated on a woody peninsula in the small village of Petrčane on its stunning Adriatic coast) which is sure to be an incredible event.

To whet your appetite for that, here's their recent and very decent remix of Walls' 'Hang Four'.

Don Fardon - I'm Alive

Smashing bit of late 60's beatery from Coventry's unsung blue-eyed soulster, Don Fardon. Currently being used on a  daft soft drinks ad.

Ashley Beedle's done a nifty re-edit, too.

LCD Soundsystem Remixes

There are about a squilizillion LCD mixes out at the mo' but my current fave is Loving Good's slightly dubby tweak of 'Home'. Honourable mention to Soulwax's version of 'Hit', too.

Monarchy - Love Get Out Of My Way (Holy Ghost Mix) & Colonel Abrams - Trapped

One of the hottest remixes in the world right now from production duo and all-round midas-touched maestros Holy Ghost!. This rmx of Monarchy's 'Love Get Out Of My Way' has more than a passing resemblance to one of house music's very early classics and one of my fave tunes, 'Trapped' by Colonel Abrams. Malcolm McLaren - R.I.P.

Malcolm Mclaren's genius was for shining a spotlight on previously hidden corners of the musical world (usually for his own self aggrandisement it has to be said!) and the project which probably best typifies this I reckon is his 1983 album, 'Duck Rock'. Containing some of the first mainstream excursions into "World Music" ('Double Dutch' and 'Soweto') and the seminal 'Buffalo Girls' it also brought the World Famous Supreme Team (and NYC HipHop radio culture)to the world's attention with the WFST acting as the hosts of the globe trotting Duck Rock radio show. Here's their single, 'Hey DJ' which (kind of) first appeared on the album and has been sampled by all manner of artists.

Shriekback - My Spine Is The Bassline

Listening to the new LCD Soundsystem album today (it's a good 'un btw) got me thinking how the post-punk/punkfunk era is still resonating with bands today. A great example of such punk-funk brilliance is Shriekback's 1982 classic My Spine Is The Bassline whose echoes can still be felt today (and on a couple of the LCD tracks!).

Willie Mitchell - R.I.P.

One of the great producers Willie Mitchell died last week aged 81. Best-known for his work as the house producer for the legendary Memphis label Hi-Records where he made such crucial cuts as 'I Can't Stand The Rain' with Ann Peebles and 'Take Me To the River' with Syl Johnson. He was also an artist in his own right producing a string of fabulous funky instrumentals which still fill floors at Northern Soul clubs to this day.

His greatest work was however with Al Green in the 1970s where he was at the controls for a series of wonderful albums from 'Al Green Is Blues' through to 'Have A Good Time' in 1976.

From the rather underrated 'Full Of Fire' LP, here's the superb title track.

Wednesday 6 January 2010

Roisin Murphy - Momma's Place

Roisin Murphy returns with new material for a new decade. It's been a couple of years since her criminally overlooked but influential (hello, Miss Gaga) 'Overpowered' album and the new single 'Momma's Place' (released on 18th Jan) with its wicked old skool house vibe bodes well for a new RM LP in '010.

Credit To Ze Edit

Following on from their superb Ze Records 30th Anniversary retrospective, the ever-excellent Strut Records have commissioned some smoking Ze re-edits from some of the biggest names around. Highlights include respected disco editist Greg Wilson's tweak of Was (Not Was)'s 'Tell Me That I'm Dreamin', Todd Terje's sublime re-working of Gichy Dan's 'Friendly Children' and a wicked dubbed-up version of Kid Creole's 1982 smash 'Annie, I'm Not You're Daddy'. Have a listen to the whole LP on Spotify here.
